Argentina is actually the fifth largest wine producing country in the world and its vines can remain productive for up to 100 years. While its wines may not be as well regarded as those of Chile, Argentina is still a good source of inexpensive but well produced wine that is a joy to drink and is rapidly gaining in reputation. There’s been a lot of improvement in the quality of Argentine wines and there’s more to come. Virtually all Argentine wine production depends on irrigation via rainfall and snow melt from the Andes.
Argentine wine growing regions are situated in wide valleys or sloping prairies close to the Andes at between 300 and 2,400 metres above sea level - the highest altitude vineyards in the world. This combination of altitude, mild, dry weather, lack of disease and the purest melt water from the Andes together with crystal clear skies and abundant sunshine gives Argentina considerable natural advantages in wine making.
