Australian wine making began in 1788 and for a while Australia supplied the British Empire with cheap fortified wines because that’s what the British wanted! Since the 1960’s, Australian wines have improved dramatically and it’s fair to say that Australia now produces some of the most dramatic, exciting and outstandingly good value for money wines in the world. Today, Australia is the world’s sixth largest wine producer.
Australia is a vast country – a continent in its own right really – and there are recognisable regional characteristics in its wines. The cabernet sauvignon grown in Victoria has a distinctive minty taste while in Coonawarra it has a flavour reminiscent of rich fruit cake. The quality of the best Australian wines is certainly on a par with France and it can compete in every classic wine category. Ongoing investment in technology and improving the quality of the raw material in the vineyard continues to drive up the standard of Australian wines.
