This winery is producing some of the most cutting edge wines in Spain and is the ultra-modern face of Rioja. Until recently, the latest generation of the Martinez family (Jose Maria) decided to change from just growing grapes to making wine. He constructed a modern cellar (and the first bioclimatic winery in Europe) and set about making fabulous modern wines from his families’ old vineyards (40-80 year old vines!). Jose Maria is a bit of a maverick. He makes Joven and Crianza wines but refuses to make Reserva and Gran Reserva level wines. He says “the wines tell me how much oak they need, NOT the authorities!”
