Many consider Italy to be where it all began. Home to some of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, Etruscan and Greek settlers produced wine there long before the Romans started in the second century BC. Two thousand years later, Italy remains one of the world's foremost producers, responsible for approximately one-fifth of world wine production. Depending on the vintage, Italy is considered the world's largest or second largest wine producer.
There are more than 1 million vineyards under cultivation in Italy producing wine in modern wineries and in small villages where they still tread the grapes with their bare feet. It’s been said that the Italians kept their best wines and exported anonymous “vino” in economy sized bottles. However true that may be, today many Italian producers have taken authentic vines and enhanced them in modern wines that are loquacious and unique. Getting to know the quality wines that Italy can produce, including classic choices, such as Brunello, Barolo, Amarone and Chianti, is an adventure second to none!
