I’ve written elsewhere within this blog on the subject of my uneasy relationship with Champagne (in short – it’s overpriced and has a diminishing returns the more you pay). So when it comes to festive fizz I always like to seek out alternatives.
This Christmas, the team at Classic Wine Direct have sourced their wines close to home, in fact just up the road from us!
We’ve long admired the wines of the award winning Ridgeview in East Sussex. Situated just 1 and half miles from the highest point in the Sussex Downs the combination of chalk and clay in this unique setting give the land an uncanny similarity to the terroir found in Champagne.
The father and son team that run the estate grow the same grape varieties that you’ll find in Champagne and produce the wines to the same exacting standard as you’d find in the best French Chateaux.
On a personal front, I love to see the surprise on the faces of dinner guests once you reveal that the bubbles that intoxicate them are from dear old Blighty! I guarantee that not even the most eager connoisseur of Champagne will be able to tell the difference. Real quality.
