A recent article in Decanter magazine drew attention to the increasing sales of New Zealand wine in what has become a tough market here in the UK.
In the past 12 weeks sales of New Zealand wines have rocketed by 42% here in the UK (after growing 12% last year).
So, what can we put this down to? Well, firstly, 2008 saw an unusually large harvest in New Zealand and secondly more competitive exchange rates have resulted in better value for money.
Unsurprsingly NZ Sauvignon Blanc accounts for the Kiwi’s share of sales, with just over 75% of New Zealand’s wine exports last year.
We make no bones about it here at Classic Wine Direct, the strength of the Euro against the pound has created a real challenge for UK wine retailers. Put simply, wines from Spain, France and Italy are more expensive than they were this time last year and we have to work harder to provide real value for our customers.
But it’s also encouraging that UK customers are prepared to pay a little more for wines from “The Land of the Long White Cloud” – New Zealand’s average bottle price in the UK is £6.26 wheras the average bottle price of all wine sold in the UK is £4.01.
So, what do we recommend. BUY Frost Pocket as this is amazing value and great quality.
