Just that little bit closer to heaven, perhaps?

As the vineyard’s website itself says (with the overtones of a classical creation myth):

In the highest spot
Where clouds rock our vines
Colomé is born

Owned by the Hess family estates, the rather unique Colomé winery, located in the picturesque Calchaqui valley, boasts some of the highest vineyards in the world at up to 10,000 feet above sea level. Founded in 1831, it includes vines that are some 160 years old. Bodgea Colomé focuses on Argentina’s two traditional grape varieties Malbec and Torrontes, and it is the former from which our Colomé Amalaya is made. Argentina itself has been making wine since the 1500s, its heritage stretching back to Spain, France and even Italy. While Argentina has kept much of its wine consumption at home, we are now seeing many more Argentine wines north of the border, Malbec leading the movement.

All of the grapes at Colomé are farmed bio-organically using techniques developed by the local Indians and Incas more than 2000 years ago; even the electricity for the winery is generated by turbines driven by the melt water from the Andes. Perhaps, then, the mythical flavour established by its website’s intro is not so far from the truth after all.

The Colomé Amalaya Malbec Blend 2008 itself is a deep red with purple tinges, offering ripe red fruit aromas of cherries and raspberries. The Amalaya’s Malbec base is complimented by smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Bonarda and Tannat. With partial fermentation and ageing taking place in French oak, it produces a silky little number with perfume and spice not to be missed.
