Our inaugural Wine of The Week has already become one of the firm favourites of the Classic Wine Direct team. The wine is Mahi sauvignon blanc and you can view a short video tasting with Joe and myself in the clip below
I first came across this wine when I worked with The Wine Society a few years back and what struck me most in our tasting, is that this is a a style of New Zealand sauvignon that shows more restraint than the blockbuster fruit sensations that NZ is renowned for.
It has what Big Joe describes as a pure expression of fruit and delivers real satisfaction on the palatte. In that sense it’s got more in common with the refined sauvignon’s from Sancerre and you could happily work your way through a bottle without suffering from the overwhelming acidity of some of the New World SB’s.
A little background. Mahi sauvignon blanc is made in a Ward, a relatively new wine area of Marlborough New Zealand. Mahi was established at the turn of this century by Brian Bicknell and his wife Nicola and out of the four sauvignon blancs they produce three are single vineyard wines, each showing off the individual characteristics of the vineyards that yield their fruit
Brian is one of those winemakers that we love here at CWD, he’s a man that wants his wines to reflect the individuality of the land that they are grown on. Great stuff.
Watch the clip and let us know your thoughts on both the wine and the video! Oh and don’t forget to grab yourself some fancy placemats, a beautiful wine decanter and have a glass yourself.
